What is Crossing Crafts?
Crossing crafts occurs when management assigns employees to perform work in a different craft from their own. Article 7.2 strictly limits when this can occur.
When Crossing Crafts is Permitted
Management may only assign cross-craft work in two specific circumstances:
- During particular temporary situations, such as:
- Emergency (emergencies are unexpected and non-reoccurring events)
- Management will often claim emergencies, these are almost never the case.
Prohibited Practices
Management cannot:
- Regularly schedule cross-craft assignments
- Use crossing crafts to avoid overtime
- Cross crafts to reduce staffing
- Make permanent cross-craft assignments
- Cross crafts for convenience
Filing a Crossing Crafts Grievance
What to Document
- Date and time of assignment
- Work performed
- Duration of assignment
- Any witnesses
